BIOGRAPHY


Julien Chanel, a grade 11 student at FHCI, has a thirst for knowledge and likes to be challenged. He shows commitment in all of his work. Since the beginning of high school, Julien has consistently demonstrated a discipline to achieve his personal best in all subjects. Being a natural athlete, and engaged in many sports, Julien knows what it is to be a team player.

PROFILE


Forest Hill C.I. is a very diverse group of students, with over 900 individuals. How will you ensure that you are representing all of these various opinions and voices?

Being well connected to a variety of friend groups at school allows me to hear and understand concerns, issues, and ideas of classmates and peers.

In one sentence, what do you think is the number one thing and/or most prevalent issue that students at Forest Hill CI want changed, fixed or introduced?

The student body should have more of a voice/opinion when it comes to decisions within the school.

What makes you different than all of the other candidates?

What distinguishes me from others is a positive attitude and a unique outlook on accomplishing tasks. Being able to think outside of the box allows me to bring on change and challenge the status quo.

INTERVIEW


The following questions and responses took place during live in-person interviews featuring Golden Falcon editorial staff. The responses are practically identical to the candidate’s responses.

 

In one year from today, what do you hope you have achieved? Be specific.

In one year from today, I hope I would have helped to create a more inclusive school community. I personally think that students are not given as much a say in things as they should be. In a year, I hope students and speak up and express their wants and needs

Why did you rate a fun environment as your number one value?

I rated fun environment first because if school is not a fun place to be, you would not be looking forwards to coming to school everyday, which is obviously not a good thing. I want to make everyone be heard and to give their ideas. If that is implicated into student council, the school environment would be much more fun.

Why did you rate communication as your second most important value?

With communication, if we let students be heard, that will result in a fun environment since everyone would be able to express their wants and wishes to have a better time at school. I feel like school should be a support group. If you are going through something, you should be able to go to your peers and teachers for help.

 

Can you share some examples of when you were a catalyst who brought groups with polarized opinions together so that all voices were at the table?

For many of my school projects, we will get assigned into groups you didn’t necessarily want. I will act as a mediator and leader and tie everyone together, making sure everyone is doing something they want to do. The resulting product will be better this way.

Why should students vote for you over all of the other candidates?

Students should vote for because I feel I can best represent their wants and needs. I feel like I am well connected with the school, so I know what students want. This would result in a better school environment.”  

You have the chance to say anything to the student body. What is it?

I will be your voice. I will make sure your ideas and wants are heard through the school and hopefully improve events and make your ideas a reality.

 

Why do you think you should be the representative of your grade? What experience or skills do you have that will allow to deeply understand the mindset and values of your grade?

I feel as though I am fit for this role because I have many branches that go out to different friend groups, so I have a diverse knowledge of what different cultures, ethnicities, so I have a good feeling of what each and every person would want. If I don’t, I would be open to hearing their opinion to implement it into the school.”
