Do you have any tips for incoming grade 9s to manage their workload?
When I was in Grade 9, I managed my workload by using scheduling apps which helped out a ton. The peace of mind that comes with having your week planned out is unmatched. It’s such a convenient thing that a lot of people don’t take advantage of. The standard phone schedule apps don’t always cut it, some of the scheduling apps on your App Store are super detailed and can take the weight off your shoulders. It sounds like a little thing but you have no clue how many assignments I almost didn’t hand in before my schedule app sent a notification. Some great ones are Schooly, Planner Pro, and TimeBloc.
Are there any ways you think incoming grade 9s could make the most of their time at Forest Hill?
Get involved! Sign up for clubs, join the Student or Athletic Council, sign up for some of the initiatives and events happening around the school! It’s the easiest way to make friends and find opportunities. I have met some of my closest friends through school clubs and initiatives. Take advantage of your Grade 9 year! Get as involved as possible!
What is something that really helped you as a grade 9?
Surprisingly enough, playing Video Games helped me out immensely, academically and socially! I found a steep increase in my grades as I started to play Video Games now and then (moderation is key!). It helped me relax and took the stress off of my academics, allowing me to better focus on my school work. It also helped strengthen my new friendships and revive some old ones. It is a great way to unwind and take a step back from your busy life. If you want to play online sometime, reach out!
What are some ways you would suggest to make new friends?
High School is notoriously known for it being hard to make friends. The people who think that must have never come to FHCI! The people here are so approachable and kind! There is nothing like the community we have built here at Forest Hill. I would recommend signing up for clubs and groups that interest you and reach out to people with similar interests. We have everything at FHCI; you just got to find your place.
What is a club you would recommend to join?
I would recommend joining the Business Club! The club leaders are super knowledgeable and provide quick but in-depth lessons. They also bring in guest speakers! Not to mention it is a great place to make friends and learn about new things! Some of the topics covered so far were the stock market, international trading and more. Sign up!
What was a fear you had as a grade 9 student that turned out to be untrue?
A fear that I had at the beginning of Grade 9 was that the teachers were rude, cold and unforgiving. My Middle School teachers painted them out to be heartless villains who wanted to make school as uncomfortable and torturous as possible! That is ABSOLUTELY untrue. Especially at FHCI! The teachers here are unbelievably kind people who want the best for their students and will stop at nothing for their class to enjoy the material at hand. I have nothing but nice things to say about the teachers at FHCI, and I am not saying that to get an A in my classes(even though it would be much appreciated)! I really do believe that the teachers at FHCI have the best intentions and go the extra mile for their students. They are always there to talk to and offer extra help. Get to know your teachers!
