The Secret Stress of High School

By Adam Pencer

High school is sometimes referred to as the best years of one’s life, but for many kids, it just means that they are under a lot of stress and strain. Managing grades, extracurricular activities, a part-time job, and everything else in their lives causes many students to fall short of expectations.

The main cause of stress for students is most likely their intense desire to do well in class. The fact that a significant portion of students are burning out is made even more clear by the constant deadlines, tons of schoolwork, and impending tests.

Additionally, students constantly have to battle against peer pressure, friendships, and dating, all in the pursuit of being “popular”. This can be one of the most emotionally draining feelings one can experience. With social media constantly pressed up against our faces, we have been creating this toxic culture where everyone needs to be compared to everyone. These feelings often make me reflect on a quote I’ve heard many times “Comparison is the thief of joy”. When I think about what that means, I start to struggle with understanding how if comparison is the thief of joy, why we constantly do it.

Schools and communities need to recognize these challenges and provide better support. Mental health resources, reduced homework loads, and open conversations about stress can make a significant difference.

High school may be a place for learning and growth, but it should also be a space where students feel supported, not overwhelmed. Let’s work together to make that a reality.
