Top five not-scary movies for Halloween

With Halloween coming up, friends and family are making plans to celebrate. Many people are trick or treating, decorating their house, and going to (socially distanced) parties. It is quite cold though, and a popular alternative to going out is watching a horror or thriller movie for Halloween. For all the people who prefer to watch a lighthearted movie, rather than having their blood run cold, this list is for you. Here are my top picks for the best non-scary Halloween movies: 

  1. Nightmare Before Christmas

Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas is an animated film about Jack Skeleton, the star of the Halloween parade occurring every year. He is disheartened by the monotonous nature of his Town. He wanders off into the woods in his miserable state to find a magical portal in a tree leading him to Christmas Town. Feeling uplifted by his discovery, Jack sets out for Halloween Town to have a Christmas holiday. This movie can be found on Disney+. It is rated PG movie and is a must-watch.

  1. Rocky Horror Picture Show

Jim Sharman’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a musical comedy about newlyweds Janet and Brad who end up stranded on a stormy night. In their attempt to find a mechanic for their busted tire, they find themselves in a mansion with otherworldly characters. It will be the most peculiar night of their life.  This movie can be found on Disney+. It is for mature audiences.

  1. Beetlejuice

Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice is a comedy film about a deceased couple, Adam and Barbra. They find themselves unsuccessful in scaring away a family that is living in their own home and seek help from bio-exorcist Betelgeuse. This movie is uncanny and comedic, providing a very enjoyable watch. This movie can be found on Netflix. It is rated PG.

  1. Ghostbusters (original version)

Ivan Reitman’s Ghostbusters is a sci-fi, comedy film about scientists Peter Venkman, Raymond Stantz, and Egon Spengler starting an establishment called Ghostbusters to fight off ghosts lurking in the city. With memorable ghosts such as Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, Gozer the Destroyer, and Vigo The Carpathian, this movie is sure to be memorable. This movie can be found on Netflix. It is rated PG.

  1. What We Do in the Shadows

Taika Waititi, Jasmine Clement, Chelsea Winstanley, and Emmanuel Micheal’s What We Do in the Shadows is a sci-fi, comedy, mockumentary about 5 vampires who are flatmates. While living in their flat, they combat the difficulties of modern life and meet with other human-like creatures such as werewolves, witches, and more. This movie can be found on FX and Apple TV. It is a hilarious film and is for mature audiences.
